The Belgian Malinois is a highly intelligent breed with an intense working drive and eagerness to please. Historically bred to be herding dogs, the Malinois often displays herding-type behaviours, such as heel nipping, circling and chasing, which may be undesirable to many households. They are an obedient breed, but their dominant personality requires a handler who is firm and consistent in setting and maintaining ground rules. Their protective instincts and inherent loyalty to their family requires socialization with people and other animals from a young age.
